Becoming a Cruise Ship Photographer
No, you will need to arrange your own accommodation and transport to and from the academy. This expense is at your own expense.
In Stellenbosch at the prestigious Stellenbosch Academy of Design & Photography campus.
With accepted prior photography experience approved by our course manager, you can attend the 2-week Cruise Ship Photography course.
No previous experience needed. Our 3-week course equips you with all the photography skills needed to become a successful Cruise Ship Photographer.
You have two options:
- If you don’t have any prior photography experience, you can do the 3-week course
- If you have approved prior photography experience, there is a 2-week course
If you’re healthy, between the ages of 21 and 35 and have a valid South African passport, you can apply.
Finding a Job on a Cruise Ship
Safe transportation from your nearest international airport all the way to the ship, will be arranged for you.
Yes, accommodation is free while working as a Cruise Ship Photographer aboard your contracted ship.
- Training: 2 or 3 weeks.
- Application to Cruise Line: 3rd week of training.
- Interview with the Cruise line: 1–2 weeks after training.
- Get hired by the Cruise line.
- Medical, police clearance and visa in place.
- Fly to the ship: 2–4 months after the course.
The Cruise Ship Experience
Absolutely. There are strong promotional pathways, including roles such as Senior Photographer, Studio Photographer, and Photo Manager.
Contracts are typically 6 months aboard, followed by 2 months leave before your next contract.
No, all professional camera equipment is provided.
Yes, all cruise ships have a fully equipped medical centre and hospital onboard, available to crew members during your contract.
Photographers earn a starting salary of approximately R21,500 per month, plus commission. Earnings are paid in tax-free USD, and most candidates can pay off their training costs within just over one month of working aboard.
